Coffee and Code in Calgary (March 13)

by John Bristowe on March 8, 2009 · 16 comments

Stop your grinnin’ and drop your linen! The first Coffee and Code for Calgary is taking place on Friday, March 13 (9 AM to 4 PM) at the Kawa Espresso Bar:

Kawa Espresso Bar

My name is John Bristowe. I’m a Developer Advisor for Microsoft Canada and I’ll be at this event to chat or answer questions about our development platform. Wanna see a code snippet featuring Silverlight? Care to know more about Visual Studio? Or, are you simply interested in the new APIs for Windows 7? Whatever the topic – no matter how geeky - I’d be more than happy to chat with you about it.

Why not take a break and come enjoy some extraordinary coffee? Bring your laptop and join your fellow developers in the Calgary area to chat about code and topics related to software development! We’ll see you there!

Update: My friend, James Kovacs has informed me that he’ll be joining Coffee and Code Calgary to have a chat with folks about all things ALT.NET. If you’re looking for *the* .NET expert in western Canada, you can look no further than James “Mr. CLR” Kovacs.

Will be there for sure.

Would love to find out more about / talk about some of the little known .net edge stuff:
- Phalanger (PHP on .net)
- The Mono Project
- Using .net to write iPhone Apps via Unity – would love to know if anyone has done this at all

Also would love to learn more about MVC on .net for upcoming projects.

I understand coffee will be provided by the establishment. So who exactly will be doing the coding part John? ;)

John Bristowe March 8, 2009 at 11:43 pm

Why not show up and I’ll show you a thing or two? :-D

Aurynn Shaw March 9, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Sounds like I’m going to show up.

I can talk about OSS stuff that I work with – Python, Pylons, PostgreSQL. OSS technologies and such.

See you there Bristowe. Make sure you bring your PowerPoint. You’re going to need it!

How do all of you people have the day off. 9am to 4pm on a weekday? Gen-Y is in full effect.

John Bristowe March 10, 2009 at 12:17 pm

@Cameron: You’re assuming that we’ll be doing nothing but sitting around and drinking coffee. Quite the opposite, I’m afraid. I don’t know about the others but I plan to get a great deal of work done on Friday.

This is not Gen-Y. The workplace has evolved (and will continue to do so) to a point where it has become virtualized (i.e. part face-to-face, part online). Many of us in this industry are enabled to develop software remotely. For example, I can RAS/VPN into the office without having to physically reside on-site. In fact, I find myself to be incredibly productive when working remotely because of the eliminated distractions. That stated, I do make sure to connect with my colleagues on a daily basis.

Activities like this hold incredible value for developers. They provide a forum for us to express and share ideas with each other. It shouldn’t be overlooked.

I encourage you to drop by and have a conversation with us about working remotely. I’m sure that there will be some great ideas about facilitating a virtualized workplace that will come in handy!

@Cameron;

I’m a fully mobile worker regardless. My laptop and I can do my job from everywhere in the world – I just generally do it from my desk @ home.

I will be there!

John Bristowe March 10, 2009 at 3:26 pm

@Percy: Great! Looking forward to seeing you!

I would love to attend, but alas you guys seem to have planned it on the same Friday as SXSW is launching.

If this is happening again, I’d love to attend.

John Bristowe March 10, 2009 at 5:29 pm

We’ll host another one soon afterward! Not to worry.

7 hours of sitting in a coffee shop, John you won’t be able to sleep for a week. I Don’t drink coffee but hopefully I should be able to find a pepsi or something there as I’m planning on coming down and joing you for a bit.

I missed this sorry, John, but I would definately be keen to attend something like this, even more so, if it were some kind of virtual event, as I too often work from anywhere, but often miles away from Calgary…Definately keen on some VS tips and tricks.
